Emergencies
If you think it is urgent and cannot reach me on the above number please try Ash Baker (my maintenance man) on 07948 280328. He is local and may be able to advise you or assist. Note this number is only for guests staying who have an emergency.
The Cottage
The double bed and twin beds will have been made up ready for your arrival. Towels will also be left for you.
A supply of tea, coffee, sugar, carton of milk and drinks for children will have been supplied for you by my cleaner Debi.
I also leave some of my photo products for you as a gift. This will usually be a calendar and a couple of my greetings cards.
Central Heating and thermostat
The heating thermostat is at the end of the dining area by the table. It is not set on timer so you can switch ON, OFF and turn up and down as you prefer. The heating may have been switched on for you in colder weather. The thermostat may be set lower, probably 18 degrees, but you can turn up as necessary. I usually find 21 degrees is about right, maybe more if you feel the cold. Then I turn down at night time or OFF. You can turn up the radiators as required. The artificial log burner fire is electric and independent from the gas central heating. The bottom part of fire can be opened showing the dials. The left hand one can be turned from 1 to 9. If the fire is turned up full continuously, the central heating will turn off if the thermostat senses that the maximum temperature has been reached. This will mean that the heating will also go off in the bedrooms.
If you wish to have the radiator/towel rail on in the bathroom but not elsewhere you can leave the central heating on and turn down other radiators.
Dog Owners
If you know your dogs will go on the settees can you please use throws to protect them as suggested when your booking confirmation was sent. It is so difficult to remove all dogs’ hair and not all guests staying have dogs. As I am not charging extra for dogs I do not want my cleaner to have extra work which I will have to pay for. This helps me to keep my prices as low as I can. I do have a large number of dogs stay so it can be a large job for my lovely cleaner.
Books Toys and Games and DVDs
Feel free to swap fiction books or take home if you have not finished. Please do NOT remove nonfiction guide books etc.
Tourist Information Office
Library Mill Pool Car Park in West Looe
They sell Eden Project tickets in advance saving up to 15% on prices at the door.
They can help with rail information for The Looe Valley line and beyond plus all local bus routes etc.
Shops markets and car boot sales
There are two small Co-ops in Looe.
The nearest large supermarket is Morrisons just outside Liskeard, along the dual carriageway, ISLAND SHOP turn off. On the same roundabout there is a B&M (low price general store), Argos and large pet store.
There are car boot sales every Sunday in summer at West Wayland Farm which is next to the Caravan and Camping site on the left hand side of the road on the way to Polperro. They operate 8 to 12 (but many are there earlier) and there are lovely sea views (on a clear sunny day) to add to the experience. Sometimes they start later in the year due to the rain. The field cannot be used until the crop has been harvested. It is on the A387 road at the junction of the B3359 a few miles out of Looe. There is a recorded message which is updated at 7.00 on the day of the car boot sale 07530 690717.
For a full shopping experience Plymouth has everything you would need. You can drive but the bus journey is nice too although it does take longer than it used to. i.e. 1 hour 30 minutes usually. Great if you have a bus pass and plenty of time. Buses are less frequent in winter so do check time tables before you visit.
Internet and Mobile Phone reception
My Wi-Fi is supplied by Plusnet and is Super-Fast Fibre. Full fibre is not yet available in Looe but I will have this when it becomes available.
Mobile phone reception is fairly poor in many parts of Looe. There is phone reception at the cottage but it varies. It works best in the kitchen area or just outside in the courtyard. If you wander out a few yards towards the seafront there is much better reception.
Looe Town
There are a variety of shops restaurants and cafes which I prefer not to recommend as I think it is lovely to just explore and try them yourselves. However apart from summer time, The Salutation Inn has a log fire which is always very warm and cosy. It is also a ‘MUST’ visit in December to see their Christmas decorations which they are renowned for.
Boat Trips
There are many boats trips which you can take from Looe including a trip to Looe Island which is fabulous. Views below on my last trip to Looe Island. There are several boats that take people fishing too.
If you just want a quick trip across the river there is a little ferry costing only £1.00. It saves a longer walk around across the bridge, if walking to or from West Looe or Hannafore. It is fun to do and great for taking some photos or videos of the river. It cannot run at low tide but they run quite late in the evenings during the summer. There are fishing trips available also. There are various boards along the Quay with up to date information.

Leisure Centre

Golf
Looe Golf Club welcomes guests (situated on the Plymouth Looe Road about 2 miles from Nomansland.
Tennis and Bowls
Visitors welcome at both these clubs on the front at Hannafore West Looe.
Parking
My parking permit is for the seafront and the space is now number 46. Changed on 1st April 2025. It is essential that the parking permit is shown at all times and you park between the white lines otherwise you could be fined daily.
Parking is free in the road going into Looe, before turning over the bridge, for one hour and also after six in the evening. There is a short term car park on the other side just after the Texaco garage. This is also free after six.
Buses Trains and Taxis
Buses
It is well worth using the bus to Plymouth especially if you have a bus pass. It used to take an hour but now seems to take 1 hour 30 minutes usually. The scenery is lovely and it drops you right by the City Centre and there are no parking fees. You can also get buses to Polperro which is a lovely trip and saves parking fees, which are rather expensive.
Trains
There is a small branch line at Looe which runs along the river to Liskeard where you can get main line trains. It is a lovely journey and worth doing on its own for a day out to Liskeard. You can get connections to other destinations in Cornwall from Liskeard. You can also drive to Liskeard and pay a small charge to park (currently £2) if travelling any distance as it reduces the amount of train changes. St Ives, Falmouth, Truro are easy to visit on the train and very reasonable compared to petrol costs and parking.

Dog Walking
Looe beach is not Dog Friendly for ANY of the year but at the end of Looe Main Beach there are some steps leading over the cliffs to another part of the beach. It is rocky but dogs are allowed there. Dogs are also allowed on the wide promenade by Looe Beach. An alternative which is popular with dog owners is the slipway by the Life Boat Station. At low tide there is a river beach and dogs enjoy running along here and swimming. Photo shows the slipway below at high tide.
Hannafore Beach is nice for Dog walking at low tide or on the promenade above at high tide. This leads to a large green area at the end also which is the beginning of the Coast Path. To reach Hannafore, cross the bridge towards West Looe and turn immediately left along by the river. Pass the church on the left and go up the hill. You can park free in the road once you pass the hotel parking spaces. This photo was taken in March. Parking is free all year but it will be busier in main season.
There are some lovely woods particularly Kilminorth Woods which have easy access off the large Mill Pool Car Park in Looe.
Polperro Beach is Dog Friendly but is usually covered at high tide. See photo below at low tide.
Seaton Beach is not far (a few miles). It is a sandy beach popular with dog owners and has a river running into it and a nice café. The river at Seaton Beach below.
Gig Rowing
Most weekday evenings you will see rowers training in wooden gigs. There are also glass fibre boats which cannot be used in competitions. If you are staying early or late in the year, they can usually be seen on Saturday mornings. They are six man boats with a Cox. I learnt to row gigs in Looe at the age of 59. Quite a while ago now! It is not as easy as it first appears but I wish I had discovered these fabulous boats earlier. Pilot Gigs originated in the 18th century in Cornwall to take pilots out to sailing ships as many harbours were too small for the ships to anchor. The sport is rapidly increasing in popularity both throughout Britain and abroad.
Places you might like to visit
Obviously the choices are endless but I have suggested a few of my favourites to give you some ideas.
Polperro
It is often described as one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall. Worth a visit to see if you agree! The river Pol runs through it, to the interesting harbour. You can drive there or take the bus. If you drive, there is parking in a large car park on the edge of Polperro which is rather expensive but is still a nice day out. It is a pleasant walk down to the harbour and takes about 20 minutes or so. The previous horse and carts and then the milk floats afterwards no longer run sadly. Stay and have a coffee, lunch or cream tea. Polperro is very quiet in the evenings and shops are often closed but there are some nice pubs and restaurants. Looe is busier in the evenings and most shops are open especially in the main season.
For the more energetic, walk back along the coast path to Looe. Not too strenuous if you are normally an active walker but it does have some up and down steep parts.
You can also stop at Talland Bay (shown below) on the way for pasties, ice-creams and cream teas. Closed in winter.
The forgotten corner of Cornwall
Visitors to Cornwall often pass by the majority of East Cornwall on the way to other well known tourist areas, which is why it has taken on this description. Looe is not part of this.
The forgotten corner includes Whitsands Bay, a very beautiful surfing beach therefore can often be dangerous, Kingsands and Cawsands (these villages adjoin each other), Rame Head and Edgecumbe Country Park Estate. The whole area is worth a visit possibly in one day but preferably over a several days. The walking through Mount Edgecumbe Estate is beautiful and varied. There are fabulous views of
Plymouth.

Plymouth
Plymouth is a large city with excellent range of shops, restaurants etc. It is easy to travel to, particularly by bus which can take an hour but more in rush hour, and there are no parking fees. A walk along Plymouth Hoe to the Barbican has fabulous views if you do not wish to shop. If you decide to go by car, a stop at Saltash and a walk under or over the Tamar Bridge has superb views.
Slightly further afield
Minions on Bodmin Moor is a good place to experience the Moor. There is a cafe just past the car park where you can have snacks and coffee and there is a lot to see without walking too far. There are quarries, The Hurlers standing stones, Engine Houses, cows sheep and ponies grazing. Wrap up warm. It can be chilly sometimes.

The forgotten corner includes Whitsands Bay, a very beautiful surfing beach therefore can often be dangerous, Kingsands and Cawsands (these villages adjoin each other), Rame Head and Edgecumbe Country Park Estate. The whole area is worth a visit possibly in one day but preferably over a several days. The walking through Mount Edgecumbe Estate is beautiful and varied. There are fabulous views of
Plymouth.

Plymouth
Plymouth is a large city with excellent range of shops, restaurants etc. It is easy to travel to, particularly by bus which can take an hour but more in rush hour, and there are no parking fees. A walk along Plymouth Hoe to the Barbican has fabulous views if you do not wish to shop. If you decide to go by car, a stop at Saltash and a walk under or over the Tamar Bridge has superb views.
Slightly further afield
Minions on Bodmin Moor is a good place to experience the Moor. There is a cafe just past the car park where you can have snacks and coffee and there is a lot to see without walking too far. There are quarries, The Hurlers standing stones, Engine Houses, cows sheep and ponies grazing. Wrap up warm. It can be chilly sometimes.

There is a BP garage in East Looe along station road. Petrol station on the Looe/Polperro road. Morrisons on the A38 at Liskeard.

There ARE 2 small Co-ops in East Looe. The nearest large supermarket is Morrisons on the A38 at Liskeard and ALDI Charter Way Liskeard. Waitrose is just off the A38 roundabout at Saltash.
